Interview with Simeon Ruck: ‘RUCK smart savings’ - high-quality instruments at a fair price
Materials, energy and ongoing operating expenses are increasing - at the same time, the demand for consistently high treatment quality remains unchanged. Many practices are therefore faced with the question of how quality and cost-effectiveness can be harmonised in the future. HELLMUT RUCK GmbH is responding to precisely this challenge with the new ‘RUCK smart gespart’ product line. The range comprises five high-quality instruments that have been developed for practical use in podiatry, foot care and cosmetics - and at a fair price, without compromising on the key quality features.
In the interview, Managing Director Simeon Ruck explains how a clearly defined product concept emerged from the central question of economic relief. A low price only makes sense for RUCK if quality, reliability and responsible production conditions can be fully guaranteed.
Mr Ruck, what prompted the development of ‘RUCK smart gespart’? What motivated you to launch this concept?
The decisive trigger was the increasing cost pressure that many of our customers have reported to us in recent years. Small and medium-sized businesses in particular are increasingly faced with the challenge of having to carefully weigh up necessary investments – even for products that are indispensable in everyday use. It was important to us not to respond to this with simple savings solutions, but with a well-thought-out concept.
With ‘RUCK smart savings’, we have developed a product line that helps practices continue to rely on reliable, high-quality instruments without putting excessive strain on their budgets. Our aim was to combine quality and price awareness in a meaningful way and create a solution that really works in everyday practice.
How did you manage to optimise the price without compromising the quality of the products?
The key lay in a very conscious analysis of our processes. We made a conscious decision to work with a production facility that operates efficiently and at the same time meets our high quality standards. The decisive factor here was not to save on materials or safety, but to focus on the essentials. By defining clear processes and dispensing with functions that are not absolutely necessary in everyday practice, we were able to significantly reduce costs.
The ‘RUCK smart savings’ instruments are clearly geared towards everyday practice. What was particularly important to you in this regard?
Our goal was to develop solutions that impress in everyday work – through reliability and quality. Instruments must be ready for use every day, fit comfortably in the hand, remain hygienically flawless and fulfil their function even with frequent use. That is what we focused on.
Practices benefit in several ways: they receive functional, robust instruments that withstand the demands of everyday use, and at a particularly attractive price-performance ratio. This allows budget requirements to be met without compromising on quality, hygiene or ergonomics.
How do you rate the price-performance ratio of ‘RUCK smart gespart’ – and what distinguishes the products from other low-cost alternatives on the market?
Our price-performance ratio is based on a carefully considered cost structure. We have optimised where it makes sense to do so, without cutting corners in key areas. Unlike many low-cost alternatives, we rely on durable, reliable instruments that are designed for continuous professional use. The difference becomes particularly apparent in long-term use: products that initially appear inexpensive often incur follow-up costs due to faster wear and tear or a lack of reliability. ‘RUCK smart savings’ takes a different approach – with robust quality, reliable functionality and fair production conditions that are by no means a given in this price range.
Why did you decide to relocate the production of ‘RUCK smart gespart’ instruments to Pakistan?
Several factors were key to our choice of production location. Pakistan has specialised manufacturing companies with a high level of craftsmanship, which enables instruments to be produced cost-effectively while still meeting our quality requirements. However, it was not just the price that was decisive for us, but also the establishment of a long-term and reliable partnership..
Another equally important aspect was the social and ethical conditions at the site. I visited the production facility in person in December to see for myself. For us, the quality of a product does not end with the finished instrument – it begins with the people who manufacture it. Only when both aspects are in harmony can we act responsibly as a company.
How do you ensure that social standards are upheld in production, and why is this so important to you?
For us, social responsibility is not an add-on, but a basic requirement. Fair wages, safe working conditions and regulated working hours are non-negotiable for us – regardless of where production takes place. That is why we only work with partners who share this commitment and are prepared to take on responsibility beyond mere manufacturing. In concrete terms, this means that we personally check the production conditions on site and ensure that wages are above the regional average, working hours are adhered to and social benefits are guaranteed. For us, the human aspect is inseparable from product quality. Only when both are right can we create an offering that makes economic sense and at the same time corresponds to our own values.
How does ‘RUCK smart gespart’ manage to combine responsibility and cost-effectiveness – and what were the biggest challenges in doing so?
The biggest challenge was to reduce costs without compromising on quality or ethical standards. For us, it was never an option to cut corners on the functionality of the instruments or on our responsibility towards the people involved in production. That's why we searched very specifically for solutions that took both aspects into account. It is crucial that quality, fair production conditions and a conscious focus on the essentials are considered from the outset.
What requirements do you place on your production partners in terms of transparency and quality assurance?
Transparency is a fundamental requirement for us. We expect all steps in the manufacturing process to be documented in a traceable manner and clearly defined quality assurance guidelines to be adhered to. This includes regular checks on both product quality and working conditions. To ensure that these standards are met on a permanent basis, we rely on binding standards, regular checks and direct communication with our partners. Personal visits and audits are an important part of our cooperation, ensuring that our quality and responsibility standards are not only formulated but also put into practice on a daily basis.
‘RUCK smart savings’ is designed as a long-term concept. What can practices expect from it in the future?
Yes, exactly. ‘RUCK smart savings’ is the start of a long-term concept. Our goal is to further strengthen RUCK as a reliable partner for price-conscious quality in the coming years – with solutions that enable economical working while meeting our standards of quality, responsibility and innovation.
In the coming years, we want to gradually develop the concept further and examine in which product areas such an approach makes sense. Categories such as hygiene products or consumables, where practices have a high demand for economical yet high-quality solutions, are particularly conceivable. However, we will only consider expansion if it meets the quality and responsibility standards associated with RUCK.
What do you say to customers who are still hesitant to try this line?
‘RUCK smart savings’ is not a compromise, but a conscious alternative. Practices receive reliable, precise instruments that meet the demands of everyday use and at the same time enable economical working. Anyone who values quality, responsibility and a balanced price-performance ratio will find a solution here that will pay off in the long term.
