Nova SE - Replace the chuck head

Replacing the replacement chuck head – reserving functionality and safety

After a long period of use, it is possible that the replacement chuck head will no longer hold an inserted instrument adequately, resulting in the instrument no longer rotating when the handpiece motor is switched on, or the instrument no longer being able to be inserted into the chuck. This deterioration in the function of the replacement chuck head is normal and is not a reason for complaint.

Note

Contaminated dust particles may be released when replacing the replacement chuck head. Therefore, wear suitable mouth and nose protection. Disinfect the workplace and the drill with a suitable surface disinfectant.

Why does my replacement chuck head on the Nova Pro and SE make a noise when the handpiece motor starts?

When the handpiece motor starts, there is a short, mechanical noise, which is completely normal and does not indicate a defect.

Background: Automatic phase alignment
Every motor – including the one in your Nova Pro or SE – must realign the polarity of the phases each time it is switched on. This process requires a highly brief change from clockwise to counterclockwise rotation (only for a fraction of a second) in order to find the correct direction of rotation.

Cause of noise: Intended play in the coupling
The replacement chuck head is connected to the coupling with a defined amount of play. This play is necessary so that the replacement chuck head can be attached without any problems. At the exact moment when the motor determines its direction of rotation, this small amount of play causes the audible ‘scratching’ noise.

What you can do
- Make sure that the replacement chuck head is correctly and completely locked in place.
- Make sure that a bur is inserted – operation without a bur can cause additional noise or change the perception.
