Minimalist design – greater efficiency thanks to less distraction

In day-to-day practice, one thing matters above all else: smooth operations. This is precisely where the ingenious design of the RUCK Nova Pro Podiatry Drill and Nova SE. With a clear focus on ergonomics, clarity and intuitive operation, unnecessary controls have been deliberately omitted – including the traditional hand switch for activating the device.

What may at first glance appear to be a compromise is, in fact, a technological advance.

  • The motor starts automatically when the handpiece is removed
  • The motor stops when the handpiece is inserted
  • Alternative operation via the display is possible
  • Reduces unnecessary movements
  • Supports ergonomic working

This modern solution delivers significantly simplified, more efficient handling – entirely without the need for the additional step of using a separate hand switch. Older devices can also be retrofitted with this function via a software update, so that new Nova SE devices are furnished with it as standard from 2026.

The principle of minimalist design is not a new trend, but a logical evolution of technical devices. Leading global brands such as Apple have for years relied on a clear, minimalist design that provides intuitive operation and a focus on the essentials. This philosophy has also reached the medical sector: less distraction, more functionality, maximum clarity – all of this is reflected in the Nova Pro and Nova SE.

Winner of the Red Dot Design Award

The outstanding design quality of the Nova Pro has been recognised with the prestigious Red Dot Design Award – one of the most significant international prizes for product design. This accolade confirms that the Nova Pro not only offers practicality, but also sets the highest standards in terms of design. A device that combines functionality, aesthetics and user-friendliness to an excellent standard.

Scientifically grounded product design in medical technology

The design of medical devices is subject to strict regulatory requirements concerning both safety and usability. Standards such as DIN EN 62366 stipulate that usability – i.e. effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction – must be systematically analysed and validated. Furthermore, ISO 13485 emphasises the need for a structured design and development process from planning through to validation. A key principle is usability engineering, which places the focus on the user, minimises operating errors and maximises efficiency.

Design philosophy: Form follows function

The maxim ‘form follows function’ is a guiding principle in product design. Thanks to dispensing with superfluous controls and focusing on the essentials, a product is created that is both aesthetically appealing and practical.

How does the automatic start/stop function work with the switchless handpiece in everyday practice? +
The handpiece starts automatically as soon as it is removed from the holder and stops again when it is placed back in. There is an option to switch the motor on or off via the display. This control system enables smooth movements, reduces the number of steps required and supports ergonomic working during treatment, as there is no need to constantly rotate the wrist into the correct position to operate the switch.
Is the handpiece compatible with all Nova Pro and SE drills, or only with newer models or following a software update? +
The start-stop function is integrated as standard in new Nova Pro and Nova SE units from 2026 onwards. For older Nova Pro units, the function will be automatically retrofitted via a software update, whilst older Nova SE units will receive the update during a service or via the update service.
What benefits does switchless operation provide for workflow and ergonomics compared to the traditional hand switch? +
Thanks to eliminating the need for a separate hand switch, your hands stay free, your focus on the treatment is not interrupted and movements become more fluid. This enables faster bur changes and reduces physical strain caused by unnecessary hand movements. Furthermore, there is one less wearing part, which results in minimalist service and repair requirements.
What safety and hygiene requirements must be observed when using the switchless handpiece, particularly in mobile applications? +
The handpiece, accessories and holder are easy to clean and disinfect. They are used in accordance with the same hygiene standards as the classic handpiece, thereby ensuring patient and user safety.
