Whether it’s a coarse-grained foot file or a precise corner file, which can be used for processing even hard-to-reach areas of the nail: files of various types are among the most essential tools in podiatry. Whilst special planers and foot files are used for filing and to smooth the skin of the feet, nail files are used for processing the toenails. Professional nail files suitable for various applications
Nail files are an indispensable tool in podiatry and chiropody practices for treating nail disorders or problems. Nail files are not only used to trim the nails, but are also suitable for altering the shape and structure of the nails. Nail files are available in various designs and materials to meet the different needs of your patients.
Using the right nail file is crucial for successful outcomes. The filing effect depends both on the material and the shape of the file in question.
So-called corner files are especially precise nail instruments with a single- or double-sided filing surface, which can be straight or slightly curved. They have been used primarily for filing and exposing trapped corners in the nail fold.
So-called flexi-files, which are available in plastic and stainless steel, allow for controlled and precise work thanks to their high versatility. They usually have a double-sided grit, which is available in various grades. Whilst plastic files should only be used once, stainless steel nail files can be used multiple times following appropriate disinfection or sterilisation. This makes them an environmentally and cost-conscious option compared to disposable files.
Glass files also combine precision performance with well-developed hygiene properties.
They can be immersed in special disinfectant solutions or sterilised thanks to heat. This prevents the spread of infection and thus enhances safety in your practice.
Metal nail files, for example made of stainless steel or titanium, are especially robust and durable and can also be used on nails with severe calluses. Glass files are usually made of tempered glass and provide with a particularly fine-grained surface. They file the nails especially gently and are also suitable for precise corrections.
Besides using manual nail files, it is also possible to shape and process the nails using electric files. With the aid of rotating attachments, so-called skin and nail cutters wear away calluses and thickened nail areas and smooth the surface. Here too, the grit size of the various cutting and grinding attachments is crucial to the result.
As with all instruments and tools that have been used in podiatry, nail files must also be cleaned and disinfected correctly after use to prevent the transmission of bacteria, germs or fungi.
