What is a nail brace?

Nail braces are used to treat nail deformities along with inflammation and pain caused by ingrown toenails. As nail correction braces, they relieve pressure on the nail, delivering gentle and effective correction of nail growth. They also help prevent further ingrowth of the nail into the nail fold or nail bed and restore the natural shape of the nail.

What types of nail braces are available?

Depending on the design, tension, traction and forces of leverage are used in the nail correction system to correct the nail. The following types of nail braces can be distinguished:

  • Adhesive braces: Thanks to their quick application and customised fit, adhesive braces are used especially frequently. They are glued to the nail plate and, thanks to their inherent tension, relieve pressure on the nail fold and nail fold. By gently lifting the edges of the nail, they prevent further ingrowth and correct nail growth.
  • Spring/wire braces: Wire and spring braces are also a common treatment method for ingrown nails and nail deformities. The benefit of wire braces for nail correction lies in their custom-made nature. The wire is precisely adapted to the nail and carefully hooked onto the nail edges. This has the effect of having a precise, controlled nail correction system.
  • Combination of adhesive and wire braces: Some designs combine the inherent tension of adhesive braces with the pulling and levering action of wire braces. One side of the brace is stuck on, whilst the other side is hooked onto the edge of the nail.

What are Ross-Fraser spring braces?

Ross-Fraser spring braces are among the best-known nail correction braces and have been in use for over 60 years. They were pioneered by the Scottish chiropodist Ross Fraser, who further developed spring braces for individualised treatment. The Ross-Fraser brace uses round wire, from which perfect corrective braces can be made. A special hammer with an anvil, along with wire cutters and wire pliers, are used for this purpose. These tools allow the round wire to be cut to size, flattened and deburred with precision.

What makes Ross-Fraser spring braces especially special is that the spring wire is individually adapted to the nails. Unlike other nail braces, the Ross-Fraser principle also relies on a lever effect rather than tension. This allows nail correction to be performed on one or both sides of the nail edges, as required. This is especially convenient for nails that curl inwards or grow into the skin on one side. As you manually activate and control the lever action, you always have control over the nail correction system.
