What are tamponades?

Tamponades form part of the extensive group of dressing materials. They are primarily used to stop bleeding, for wound care, for wound disinfection along with protecting sensitive treatment areas. Following surgery, they also function to fill artificially created or natural body cavities or orifices.

How do tamponades function?

The basic function of dressings in wound care is to absorb blood, wound fluid or other secretions thanks to their absorbent materials. They also serve to keep the wound open to support the healing of the underlying tissue. Sterile dressings, which are particularly soaked in an antiseptic solution, are also used for infection prevention and wound disinfection. In podiatry, nail fold dressings play an important role in nail correction system using nail braces to treat ingrown nails or  curled nails.

What are the main functions of tampons?

Depending on their design, tampons can perform various functions in podiatry and foot health. The most common applications include:

  • Wound care: In standard wound care, absorbent cotton wool dressings play a particularly important role for grazes or minor cuts. However, depending on the size of the wounds, gauze products are also used for large wounds, or foam products for heavier bleeding.
  • Stopping bleeding: Wound dressings are used to stop bleeding and are therefore part of the basic equipment for wound management or surgical procedures. Then, if the filler is to be applied directly to the wound, adhesive variants are available. To promote blood clotting in the case of large wounds or bleeding, versions containing haemostatic agents are found.
  • Disinfecting and cleaning wounds: To clean and disinfect wounds, sterile dressings are treated with an antiseptic that kills microorganisms.
  • Keeping wounds open: Then the wounds are tamponaded to keep them open for one to two days, so that the development of infection in the wounds can be monitored. This ensures that the underlying tissue can regenerate without infection.
  • Treating ingrown toenails: In podiatry, non-woven strips are inserted as nail fold dressings between the nail and the nail fold to prevent further ingrowth. The nail can grow out cleanly.

What do tamponades include?

Depending on the area of application and requirements, fillers made from various materials are available. Common materials include:

  • Gauze: Most commonly used for wound dressings, as it is an absorbent, firm material.
  • Cotton wool: Cotton wool tampons are usually cotton wool balls or gynaecological tampons made of viscose or cotton. The cotton core reliably absorbs fluids and secretions. Gynaecological tamponades also feature a removal thread and a special covering made of gauze or tubular bandage to hold the cotton together. In podiatry, tamponade cotton is also used to prevent further ingrowth of nails into the nail fold.
  • Non-woven fabric: Nail fold tamponades made of non-woven fabric are used to protect during sensitive works or if corrective braces need to be set on the foot.
  • Foam: Foam tamponades are primarily used in the shape of nasal tamponades. They are made with thermostable foam and a covering that prevents sticking or adhesion and guarantees pain-free removal. They also feature a tear-resistant pull-back thread.
