Rotating instruments

Rotating instruments, such as burs, are essential components of the podiatrist’s equipment. They can be inserted into the handpiece of a podiatry drill for various treatments. Choosing the correct rotating instruments for your daily practice involves a mix of personal preferences. One practitioner may prefer a hollow bur for corn removal, while another may opt for a spherical bur. Price also plays a crucial role in the selection process, as is the case with abrasive caps. Here, there is a choice of reusable and sterilisable, or disposable abrasive caps. While sterilisable abrasive caps may be somewhat more expensive to buy, they prove more cost-effective in the long run than the disposable option. However, disposable items excel in terms of hygiene. It’s a matter of personal priorities for each podiatrist. Each podiatrist must determine for themselves which priorities they would like to employ in their daily practice.

Nail burs vs. skin burs - it all depends on the type of cut.

Rotating instruments are commonly used to thin, reduce, or drill nails or nail plates. Metal burs come in two primary forms: the simple (longitudinal) cut or the cross (transverse) cut. Burs with a simple (longitudinal) cut have a ribbed surface, ideal for nail work. Cross (transverse) burs, on the other hand, off er greater abrasiveness, making them perfect for skin work, such as callus removal. The cross (transverse) cut is achieved by the additional notches at right angles to the existing ones.

The optimal rotation speed (RPM) for the burs

When it comes to rotating instruments, manufacturers often state the maximum possible revolutions per minute (RPM). However, achieving optimal results frequently requires considerably lower RPM values, which also contribute to the longevity of your instruments. With our many years of experience, we state our recommendations directly on each item in the catalogue or online store, ensuring you get the best out of your instruments while safeguarding their lifespan.

Carbide burs

Carbide burs are known for their high degree of precision, corrosion resistance along with a long service life. To be able to guarantee the latter, the maintenance of these burs is crucial.

Guidelines for maintaining carbide burs:

  • Carbide burs should always be prepared separately from normal steel instruments to avoid surface corrosion.
  • They must be completely dry before sterilisation.
  • After sterilisation, the they must be allowed to cool down.
  • Store them in a dry place
  • Use only disinfectant with corrosion protection.
