The RUCK Trapezium Handle

A gripping success story – the birth of the RUCK Trapezium Handle

Everyone was already highly content: RUCK hand-held instruments had pleased podiatrists with outstanding craftsmanship and easy handling, ensuring quick and safe work. Nevertheless, our developers were convinced that there was room for improvement. In 2009, they decided to start anew and completely rethink the ergonomics of their instruments. Their goal: to create the most comfortable and efficient handle for nippers that had ever existed!

"Why is an instrument the way it is?"

Like other providers, RUCK had long relied solely on a snug, semi-circular grip profile for nippers.
The only issue: The pinpoint contact area for power transmission could strain bones and muscles with prolonged use! This posed the challenge to the Head of Research & Development, Michael Fürtsch: What aspects of the ergonomics of our hand-held instruments can be further improved? Which grip profile enhances power transmission while comfortably gliding through the palm for appropriate handling? What shapes and materials have been used for other instruments, even from unrelated fields? And furthermore: How can the manufacturing process and instrument preparation be further optimised? There was much work to be done!

Optimal conditions

The solution: the trapezium handle

After a market-wide analysis of various handheld instruments and numerous discarded ideas, drawings, and prototypes, the project team settled on the trapezium grip profi le. It enhances contact area and power transmission without forcing the hand into an unnatural position. All of this comes with improved sensitivity and less strain on joints, fi ngers, and the palm. Already in the concept and design phase, the processes behind instrument production and practical use were considered: How have the working world, materials, products, and processes evolved, and what are the requirements for the future?

Streamlined processes for even more safety

Further improvements enhance the practicality of RUCK instruments with trapezium handles: A locking mechanism has been dispensed with. The blades are always protected, the instrument is always ready for use, and cleaning and disinfection are even more straightforward. As usual, the new models have been checked according to ISO 17884 for secure and hygienic instrument preparation.

Unique and patented

Before the new instruments with trapezium handles went into mass production and sale, they were thoroughly tested on the best testing platform available to RUCK: the in-house School of Podiatry! There, the design could be extensively trialled, and optimisation suggestions could be incorporated. The innovative trapezium handle is 100% a RUCK development. To prevent imitations, the design is patented. So, be cautious of counterfeits and always insist on the genuine RUCK!

Tradition is preserved

For fans of the previous semi-circular grip profile – which we still stand by – we continue to off er these tried-and-tested instruments in our product range.
So you can use what best suits your everyday practice needs.

Quality highlight: e-Polish

Most RUCK instruments undergo electro-polishing, which removes micro-level, corrosion-prone iron components, resulting in a smoother and cleaner surface. This process yields an enhanced foundation or cleaning and sterilisation, along with increased corrosion resistance.
As the final touch, the instruments receive a process known as passivation. The resulting invisible passivation layer on the surface amplifies the improved properties and offers optimal protection for the instruments.
