What are corns?
Corns – also known as clavi – are unsightly and, above all, uncomfortable areas of thickened skin. They mainly occur on areas of skin directly over bones that are exposed to regular friction or constant pressure. For this reason, corns are especially common on the feet or the little toe.
Why do corns form?
As pressure and friction contribute to the formation of corns, shoes that are too tight and constricting are among the most common causes. However, malalignments such as hammer toes or claw toes, dry skin or diabetes can also contribute to the formation of corns.
How can you discover corns?
The main characteristic of corns is rounded thickening of the skin in areas that are frequently exposed to pressure and friction. Inside the thickened area is a hard core or skin spur that grows inwards and pricks the subcutaneous tissue, bone or nerves like a thorn. This is precisely what causes the unpleasant pressure pain associated with corns, which is focused in the centre. This is also where the name ‘corn’ comes from, as the skin spur shimmers glassily through the callus and resembles a bird’s eye.
Signs of corns summarised:
- Feel hard and thickened
- Are usually beige-yellow in colour
- Between the toes, they are usually lighter in colour and softer in consistency
- A hard, glassy core (skin spur) inside, which is painful when pressed
You can find various corn care products in the RUCK product range that relieve your patients’ pressure pain and prevent friction.
With the help of high-quality corn plasters, the painful thickening of the skin can also be removed reliably and pain-free.
- Products for relief, protection and cushioning: For sensitive corns, cushioning that provides relief and pain-relieving support is required. This is achieved by using Corns protection pad ring
- Products for softening and maintenance: Corn plasters enable the quick, effective removal of often painful calluses. They relieve corns and calluses and speed up painless removal.
- Preventative products: If you are prone to corns – for example, thanks to malalignment of toes or feet – prevention using insoles or heel pads is recommended. This reliably prevents excessive pressure or constant friction.
How can corns be prevented?
To prevent the formation of corns in the first place, advise your patients to:
- to avoid tight, constricting shoes.
- to avoid high heels.
- to use shoe insoles or heel pads if there is a malalignment.
- to wear thicker socks with new shoes to prevent pressure or friction.
Popular corn products
The following products are primarily used for the removal and treatment of corns:
- Corn plasters: Protect against pressure, friction and contaminants, and remove corns thanks to effective, gentle softening.
- Insoles and pads: Relieve pressure and strain on sensitive corns or prevent corns from forming in cases of malalignment.
- Toe or ball of foot protection rings: Relieve pressure from painful corns by distributing it evenly over a large area.
