Plasters
RUCK Plaster Types: For professional wound care, pressure relief or corns
Plasters are a standard item in every practice. However, as not every plaster is ideal for every part of the body, wound or health problem, our comprehensive RUCK product range provides a wide variety of plaster types. These include plasters for pressure protection against blisters, chafing or corns, for wound care or to secure bonds.
What types of plasters are available?
From small cuts and grazes to large wounds, pressure sores or thickened skin – plasters serve a wide variety of purposes. Standard plasters are made with a backing material, an adhesive layer and an absorbent wound pad. Depending on their intended use, plasters fall into the following categories:
- How they work: The main function of plasters is to protect wounds, sensitive or stressed areas of skin, or other injured or diseased parts of the body. They can help to stop bleeding, protect the wound from contaminants and infection, prevent the wound from reopening, or even promote healing thanks to a moist wound environment.
- Material: Standard plasters also differ thanks to their backing material, which can include soft non-woven fabric, robust woven fabric or waterproof film. In addition, you can find plasters made from especially breathable materials, hydrogel plasters containing up to 60 per cent water, strong-adhesive universal plasters, or hypoallergenic, skin-friendly sensitive plasters.
- Shape and size: Plasters are available for a wide variety of health problems, including large standard plasters, finger strips, elastic adhesive fleece with contour-fitting, plasters that adapt to flexion points, or pressure-relief plasters with internal padding. Depending on their size, plasters can be found in oval, round, rectangular or adjustable shapes.
Key characteristics of plasters
When choosing plasters, the following characteristics are particularly important:
- Absorbent, strong material
- Breathable and air-permeable
- Water-resistant or waterproof as required
- Pain-free and gentle on the wound when removed
- In the case of hydrogel plasters: cooling, pain-relieving and promoting a moist wound environment
- Skin-friendly and hypoallergenic
- For moveable body parts: as elastic as possible
- For corn plasters: special pressure protection against corns with ingredients such as salicylic acid to remove thickened callus
Which plasters are specifically used in podiatry?
The treatment and care of feet place specific demands on plasters and dressing materials. As toes and feet are subject to heavy strain, the following plasters, amongst others, are used in podiatry and foot health:
- Wound, dressing and fixation plasters: Traditional wound management is also part of everyday practice in the treatment of feet. For this reason, soft, elastic and pliable quick-dressing plasters are used, which adapt to the contours of the foot. Dressing and fixation plasters, in turn, help to secure dressings, fixation bandages or compresses.
- Corn plasters: Pain relief, pressure protection and healing – corn plasters combine all these properties. They distribute pressure evenly over a large area, reduce friction and, where necessary, contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, which delivers the ability to remove calluses.
- Callus plasters: Callus plasters deliver the general treatment for stubborn, uncomfortable or painful calluses. They also contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, which helps the upper layers of skin absorb moisture and accelerates the breakdown of dead skin cells.
- Nail correction plasters/nail fold tape: Toenail plasters are applied to the nail in cases of ingrown nails. Thanks to their especially unique shape along with a special pin in the centre of the plaster, they relieve pressure on the nail fold and help the nail to grow out normally.
- Taping: Along with pressure points and reduce friction, adhesive bandages are used in taping. Nail fold tapes, for example, work on the same principle as nail correction plasters. They are present on the outside of the toe to pull the nail fold outwards and reduce pressure on the nail.
