Components of the ORTOGRIP professional

Handle

The asymmetrical handle is used for easier handling and positioning of the brace. The handle is cut off after the end hooks have been inserted into the nail fold.

Action part

The two action parts are made of the S-curve, the roof and the end hook. They are also often described as the “legs”.

S-curve

The S-curve owes its name to its S-shape. Its lower part serves as a holder for the loop to be inserted.

Roof

In order to achieve a flat rather than a punctual distribution of forces, the wire is bent at one point like a roof. The wider the nail, the larger the roof should be.

End hook

The end hooks are inserted pain-free into the nail fold at the desired position.

Using the ORTOGRIP professional brace correctly

1. Modify the brace according to the affected nail.

2. Position the brace.

3. Activate the brace by attaching the double eye loop.

Activation refers to the creation of tension. It occurs when the loop is twisted and the action parts are connected. The more the loop is twisted, the more the brace is activated.

4. Position and mould the gel button.

The trimmed loop forms a secure joint with the ends of the action part. This needs to be protected. A two-component plastic for nail prosthetics (acrylic-based) is used for this purpose. The viscous compound is moulded into a “button” that encases the joint.

Treatment for ingrowing nails

Watch this video to see the correct application technique of the ORTOGRIP professional brace

Based on the proven VHO Osthold principle of this 3-part brace, the tension can be precisely controlled by twisting a central loop. The coloured plastic handle facilitates the fitting of the brace. Discover all the possibilities in this video and deepen your learning.

ORTOGRIP professional loop

The loop is hooked into the two separate S-curves of the brace. By twisting the loop with a coiling hook and pulling the two action parts together as a result, a strong tension is built up. This force lifts the nail edges.

The physical forces

The force of the loop

The squared corners of the loop are important for the formation of a precise tension distribution during twisting. The corner of the loop must sit exactly in the S-curve of the brace before it is twisted.

Tension

The end hooks inserted around the edge of the nail exert a tension on the entire nail plate. How much force is transferred also depends on the angle between the wire leg and the longitudinal axis of the nail plate. At a 90° angle, the total tension is transmitted. For unilateral problems, a brace of a smaller size is used on the side of the problematic side.

Force of leverage | Spring force

The force of leverage is used to lift the nail plate on one side. For this purpose, a pivot point is defined on the nail surface, tension is exerted via a long lever, which supports the bending force on the short leg.

The elasticity results from the material properties, the correcting forces and finally from the activation of the brace by bending (spring force). An important element is the button-shaped covering of the wire ends. A springy motion of the brace is provided by pressure from above (upper side of the shoe). This function is intended to support the treatment. The button in particular sets the brace in motion when walking and as a result results in spring force.

Additional force from the gel button

In addition, a spring action of the brace is provided by pressure from above (upper part of the shoe and sock). This serves to support the treatment as intended, because the button in particular sets the brace in motion when walking and as a result leads to the activation of the spring forces.

Interview with an expert

„In the beginning I had such great reservations for using braces - today it is my area of expertise.“

Karina Frömter, Director PodG Medical Practice for Podiatry in Nuremberg, Germany.

Karina Frömter is the director of her medical specialist practice for podiatry in Nuremberg and has been a passionate podiatrist for 10 years. She is also passionate about nail correction. Her deep knowledge in the RUCK NAIL CORRECTION systems led her to train as one of our RUCK Academy educators. In an exclusive interview, she tells us about the benefits of the Ortogrip brace in everyday practice and what she would like to share with “newcomers to bracing”. Karina regularly uses the RUCK® Nail Correction System ORTOGRIP professional braces in her practice. But as she tells us, this was not always the case. “At the beginning of my career, I had a such great reservations for using braces and avoided them. Until one day I just couldn’t make any progress with a patient.

That’s when I confronted the issue and today it’s my area of expertise.” Karina is convinced that offering professional nail correction systems brings clear added value for both the patient and the practice: “Patients often come to me with health problems that another podiatrist could not resolve. With the proper treatment, these patients become symptom-free again.” But she notes quite clearly that it is not only the patient’s well-being that is paramount, but also the business aspect of brace treatment that should be taken into account. - the expertise required for the treatments should be appropriately charged for.
