Callus files and rasps

HELLMUT RUCK Callus files and rasps

Callus files and rasps are tools used in podiatry to remove calluses from the feet and to perform processing of rough or calloused areas of skin. To keep feet healthy and prevent pain caused by excessive callus build-up, podiatrists and foot care professionals use special files and rasps to file away excess calluses. Different podiatric tools and instruments, such as planers along with drills with grinding or milling attachments, also serve this function and enable a bespoke treatment.

There are various types of callus files and rasps that have been used in podiatry for different purposes. One of the most common types is stainless steel callus rasps and files. Podiatric files for removing calluses usually have two sides with different grits. Whilst the coarse side is used to process heavily calloused areas, the finer-grained side is intended for smoothing the skin in areas less affected by calluses or corns.

The classic callus file has a flat, elongated shape and is made of stainless steel or plastic. The rough surface of the file has been used to sand away calluses on the skin of the feet, then restoring the skin’s softness and silkiness. The file is held at a 45-degree angle and guided over the affected areas with gentle pressure. Callus rasps work in a similar way, though they have a more abrasive effect than files. A delicate touch is required when using both callus files and rasps: adequate pressure must be applied to remove the calluses. Yet, applying too much pressure to the skin can have a negative effect and lead to injury.

Removing calluses: Rasp and files for use in podiatry

Besides metal files, glass callus files are also used in podiatry. They provide with especially gentle yet thorough callus removal and are so that they are also suitable for sensitive areas.

As hygiene is of paramount importance in podiatry, callus files and rasps, as well as all other instruments, are generally made of robust material that is easy to clean and disinfect. Besides stainless steel rasps and files, which can also be well heat-sterilised, callus files that use disposable filing blades have also proven their worth. Then you can prevent the transmission of germs, bacteria or fungi, allowing you to ensure a safe treatment environment for your clients.

Besides callus files and rasps, which are used manually, there are also electric devices with rotating attachments for grinding or other processing of the skin of the feet or the nails. With varying types and severities of calluses, different skin cutters can be used. Their abrasive surface helps to gently remove severe calluses or thickened skin in specific areas to relieve them.

In most cases, electric callus files and rasps are larger and more powerful than manual tools. Their rotating grinding discs remove excess calluses especially quickly and effectively. Some electric callus files and rasps feature various speed settings to ensure precise and safe callus removal. To enable optimum treatment, podiatrists and foot care professionals use a range of devices and tools designed for callus removal or the treatment of corns. The tools required for individual treatment can then be selected according to the specific condition of the feet.
