Whether on diabetic feet or conventional injuries such as rhagades, cracked skin or blisters: In order to promote wound healing, consistent wound management action is also required in podiatry and chiropody. Especially when treating diabetics, maximum precision, sensitivity and a keen sense for minimal skin changes are required.

These indications require professional wound treatment of the feet:

  • Nail bed damage, foot ulcers and gangrene on the diabetic foot rhagades
  • open cracked skin
  • painful blisters
  • nail fungus
  • Inflammation of the nail bed or nail fold
  • Aftercare for surgical procedures

Diabetic foot: Preventing the formation of wounds

Before acute and chronic wounds need to be treated, diabetics can do a lot to prevent their formation. You can give your patients these recommendations:

  • Wash their feet in a lukewarm foot bath with mild skin care products and then dry them well. Do not skip the spaces between the toes with you.
  • Use a nail file to file the toenails straight, not round. Scissors, clippers or nippers are not suitable for diabetics due to the risk of injury.
  • Remove callus gently. Prefer to use pumice stones instead of rasps.
  • Apply cream to dry feet on a regular basis. Products with urea (5-10 per cent urea) are suitable instead.
  • Change socks daily and favour materials with a high cotton content.
  • Enter new shoes and check for possible pressure points.
  • Consult a professional podiatrist and have your foot health checked regularly thanks to your diabetologist.
